Production planning, bills of materials, work orders, quality checks and multi-warehouse stock live in registers, Excel and WhatsApp until the business grows enough for that to hurt. That is the point where manufacturers look at Odoo.

Tally is accounting software; Odoo is an ERP with accounting inside it. If your pain is GST returns and ledgers, Tally or Zoho Books is enough. If your pain is production planning, material shortages, stock accuracy, job work and quality, Odoo adds the manufacturing, inventory and purchase modules Tally does not have, with Indian GST localisation.
What Tally does well
Ledgers, vouchers, GST returns data, TDS, a chart of accounts every Indian CA knows, and speed for a single accountant. For a trading business with simple stock, Tally plus a CRM can be enough for years.
Where Tally stops for a manufacturer
- No bill of materials or work orders; production is tracked outside the system.
- No material planning; shortages are discovered on the shop floor.
- Stock by godown but no locations, lots, expiry or quality holds.
- Job work, subcontracting and vendor performance handled in Excel.
- One machine, one user at a time, no mobile access for stores or dispatch.

Odoo's Indian localisation covers GST, e-invoicing, e-way bills and TDS. We configure GSTINs, HSN codes and document formats and reconcile the first period with your CA, so the accounts side does not regress when the factory side improves. See Odoo Accounting.
When to stay on Tally
If production is simple, stock is small and the real problem is sales follow-up, keep Tally, add Zoho CRM and integrate the two. See Tally integration. Moving to an ERP to fix a sales problem is expensive and disappointing.
How the migration works
Masters, opening balances and open transactions move from Tally to Odoo; BOMs and routings are built from your production data; a parallel month reconciles the books; plant staff are trained on work orders and stock moves before the switch. Frequently asked questions
Can Odoo replace Tally completely?
Yes. Odoo Accounting with Indian localisation handles GST, e-invoicing, TDS and CA reporting, so Tally is not needed once the migration is reconciled.
Will our CA accept Odoo?
Yes, once accountant access and the reports they use are set up. Many Indian CAs now work with Odoo clients.
Is Odoo too big for a small factory?
Odoo is modular. A small unit can start with accounting, inventory and manufacturing only, and add purchase, quality and HR later.
Can we keep Tally and use Odoo only for the factory?
It is possible with integration, but running two systems of record adds reconciliation work. We usually recommend moving accounting into Odoo in a later phase.
